ABOUT LADY NKIRU C OKORO

Lady Nkiru Celine Okoro is the founder and Executive Director of Centa for Organizational Development (COD Nigeria); a registered national gender proportionate and balanced non-governmental, non-political, not for profit organization In Special Consultative Status with the United Nations. She is a 2010 Stanford University Fellow of Democracy, Development and Rule of Law and a Ph.D student in Gender & Development Studies at University of Abuja.

She is also the Country Co-ordinator of AfricaWoman (Nig) Communications – An Internet based International Media Charity that publishes news and information about women in Africa.

The last two decades and half of my career in Nigeria 1991 to date has been completely devoted to improving women’s socio -economic and political status and by implication their access to basic human rights and rule of law; first as a development journalists covering educational and political features in The Guardian Newspapers; later, the activities of Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOS) in Nigeria – a pioneering initiative of the Turning Point Newspapers Ltd, publishers of “The Comet” now The Nation and at Regional level writing for Africa woman communications a subsidiary of “World Woman Media Charity based in the United Kingdom while also doubling as Country Co-ordinator (Nigeria) in charge of day to administration of Africawoman programs in Nigeria.

Since December 2005 to date, l have worked as a development practitioner in the field promoting socio -economic and political empowerment of women and girls through facilitating increased access to micro credit, ICT training for development and deployment, capacity building in management skills, gender mainstreaming, gender budgeting, advocacy, networking and lobbying for increased women’s participation in governance positions in Nigeria. These, l realize are critical prerequisites of not only promoting and protecting women’s human right, but also creating veritable opportunities to increase their participation in governance and public life in Nigerian.

As a 2015 PhD student of Gender Studies at the University of Abuja, I am currently researching ” THE EFFECTS OF PATRIARCHY ON WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNANCE WITHIN THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY” . From November 2015 to May 2017, I was the south East Lead Zonal Consultant in a federal Government funded research project titled, ” Who Are Those Making Key Decisions for Us” – A survey of Women’s Participation in Politics & Governance in Nigeria”.

Between December 2010 and August 2011 in collaboration with Gender & Development Action (GADA) and funding from UNICEF, I was the EDO state lead researcher for Over Seas Development Institutes (ODI) Social Protection Diagnostics Study in Nigeria. In 2008, I researched the Impact of National Gender Policy and Gender mainstreaming in Eboyin State, a Research project of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs & Social Development. Also in 2008, I was the lead researcher in Assessing Impact of budgetary allocation on Primary Health Care and Presidential .Initiatives on Agriculture- A project of Civil Society Coalition for Poverty Eradication (CISCOPE) funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
